This colored chart shows the inheritance pattern for all of the Yline and mitochondrial DNA in your pedigree chart to 4 generations at which point you have a total of 16 great-great-grandparents.  To uncover the DNA results of these various lines, you’ll have to find an appropriate “cousin” to test.  In this example, you would need to find 14 cousins, each of which would represent their various colored line.  For example, the black male line represents your mother’s father’s line.  So to test that line, you would need to ask your mother’s brothers, or uncles, or direct male descendants of her great-uncles to test.  Once one person from that line tests, their results are valid for all males in that colored portion of the tree.
